Former Chief Executive Officer, LG Chem

Dr. Prabhakar Patil recently retired as the CEO of LG Chem (LGCPI). LGCPI is a North American subsidiary of LG Chem Ltd., one of the world’s largest producers of lithium-ion batteries for automotive (Hybrid Electric Vehicles – HEVs) and non-automotive (commercial, military, conversion, and portable equipment) applications. As such, the company has accumulated expertise in the development of safe, high-power/high-energy, compact, and lightweight lithium-ion battery systems. LGCPI was formed in 2000 in the United States with a mission to become the supplier of choice for state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery technology for automotive and industrial applications. Headquartered in Troy, Michigan, at the heart of the automotive industry, LGCPI is an easily accessible local source for the research, development, engineering, design, and packaging of lithium-ion batteries.

Prior to becoming CEO, Prabhakar worked for LGCPI’s North American research unit in South Korean with overall responsibility for the strategic direction, business development, engineering and manufacturing activities. Before joining LGCPI, Prabhakar worked with Ford Motor Company for 27 years. He served as chief engineer for the Ford Escape Hybrid from 1998 to 2003. From 1998 to 2003, he was the Chief Engineer for the Hybrid Escape Vehicle Platform, Ford's first production Hybrid Electric Vehicle. This position was responsible for addressing all elements of the business, such as technology development and prove out, system integration, strategic alliances with key suppliers, investment efficiency, quality disciplines and warranty reduction, and marketing, distribution and service strategies. Dr. Patil holds a Bachelor’s degree from IIT Bombay, a Master’s of Science in Engineering and a PhD in Engineering from the University of Michigan.
